Grant Details
Description
Dr. Adams will contribute to development and validation of the Microscale Audit of Pedestrian Streetscapes (MAPS) direct observation tool for evaluating micro-scale features and amenities that support walking. As part of the subcontract, Dr. Adams will conduct a small study in Phoenix, Arizona that audits microscale aspects (e.g., sidewalk presence and quality, cross-walk amenities, street furniture). The Phoenix validation study will audit 40 pedestrian routes from systematically selected residential locations to their nearest commercial cluster, both in person (i.e., on the ground) and with Google Earth, and then compare the two measurement approaches for concordance. The Phoenix data will be included in a larger collaboration with the Senior Neighborhood Quality of Life Study (SNQLS) research group at UC San Diego. Dr. Adams will contribute to development the sampling approach, refinement of the MAPS tool, and lead the data collection team in Phoenix. He also will contribute to data reduction and scoring, statistical analysis, and dissemination of results.
