Description
Dr. Aktipis will direct theoretical and modeling efforts to assess alternative functional explanations for the experimental findings associated with the adaptive therapy protocols. Adaptive therapy has been shown to lead to high survival in mice through stabilizing of tumor size and lower necessary doses over time to maintain that stability. The evolutionary mechanisms underlying this effect are not yet well understood, and models of tumor growth can allow us to test the viability of alternatives. In particular, I will direct the modeling of two possible explanations for the effectiveness of adaptive therapy, (1) alternating selection on sensitive and resistant cells and (2) selection favoring cells with slower proliferation rates. These models will be parameterized through data collected at Moffitt Cancer Center. Other responsibilities will include co-mentoring a post-doctoral fellow and traveling for the purposes of presenting findings and collaborating with colleagues at Moffitt.
