Elastomeric Polymer-by-Design for Blast-Induced Shock-Wave Management

Project: Research project

Grant Details

Description

Collaborate with Ted Belytschko, Sia Nemat-Nasser, and Gaurav Arya to predict the dynamic response of a candidate polymer undergoing high-frequency and high strain rate loading, through multiscale modeling. 2. Coordinate modeling efforts between Northwestern, UCSD, and ASU research teams and lead reporting efforts for internal and external review meetings. 3. Utilize theoretical and analytical understanding of homogenization, micromechanics, and coarse-graining techniques to further the numerical and experimental designs. a. With Belytschko and Nemat-Nasser, develop micromechanics-based overall constitutive models for composite RVE using finite elements, extended finite elements, and level sets. b. With Arya and Belytschko, develop a coarse-grained model of polyurea by the Iterative Boltzmann method and investigate methods to improve quantitative predictions of thermodynamic and viscoelastic properties from coarse-grain molecular dynamics simulations.
