Description

Thermodynamic Controls on the Synthesis, Structure and Reactivity of Materials for Energy Thermodynamic Controls on the Synthesis, Structure and Reactivity of Materials for Energy In continuation of the work in the funded proposal, ASU will explore the energetics of materials relevant to energy applications, with an emphasis on new materials, and to understand, in terms of both macroscopic energetics and microscopic structure and bonding, the interplay of defect chemistry, oxidation-reduction and size effects at the nanoscale in determining the properties of functional oxide materials and of new classes of non-oxide and hybrid materials. The work explicitly targets thermodynamic controls on metastability, energy landscapes, surface and nanoscale effects, and pathways of synthesis and decomposition. The research will use the specialized and unique calorimetric laboratory being developed in the School of Molecular Sciences which will be fully operational by July 1, 2020, after which time there will be no further experimental work at UC Davis, although one graduate student will be supported at Davis but will be working in absentia at ASU July 1, 2020 -June 30-2021.
