N1 - Funding Information: Emory Simmons Award from the Mycological Society of America to A.H.H. National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship to A.H.H. Funding Information: We thank Ming-Min Lee for laboratory support and Keith Seifert for suggestions on identifying dematiaceous hyphomycetes. This work was funded by the Emory Simmons Award of the Mycological Society of America, a National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship award to A.H.H., and NSF DEB-1541496 to A.E.A. We thank the University of Arizona College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and Department of Ecology and Evolution for additional support. The original isolation of the focal strains was by C.S. and P.C.Z. with J.W.D., A.S.D. and A.E.A., with support from NSF DEB-1120205 (to J.W.D. and A.S.D.) and NSF DEB-1119758 (to A.E.A.). We thank Astrid Ferrer and Joey Tanney for comments on the manuscript and taxonomic advice. We thank the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute for supporting work on Barro Colorado Island and the Republic of Panama for permission to conduct research there. This project forms a portion of the doctoral research of A.H.H. Publisher Copyright: © 2022 The Authors.

N2 - As currently circumscribed, Acrogenospora (Acrogenosporaceae, Minutisphaerales, Dothideomycetes) is a genus of saprobic hyphomycetes with distinctive conidia. Although considered common and cosmopolitan, the genus is poorly represented by sequence data, and no neotropical representatives are present in public sequence databases. Consequently, Acrogenospora has been largely invisible to ecological studies that rely on sequence-based identification. As part of an effort to identify fungi collected during ecological studies, we identified strains of Acrogenospora isolated in culture from seeds in the soil seed bank of a lowland tropical forest in Panama. Here we describe Acrogenospora terricola sp. nov. based on morphological and phylogenetic analyses. We confirm that the genus has a pantropical distribution. The observation of Acrogenospora infecting seeds in a terrestrial environment contrasts with previously described species in the genus, most of which occur on decaying wood in freshwater environments. This work highlights the often hidden taxonomic value of collections derived from ecological studies of fungal communities and the ways in which rich sequence databases can shed light on the identity, distributions and diversity of cryptic microfungi.
