Asparagus response to water, nitrogen and temperature

    Abstract

    The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of different rates of irrigation and nitrogen and the use of plastic mulch on the harvest date of fresh green asparagus in the desert Southwest. Plastic tents increased production by 74% during the months of December and January because the soil temperatures were warmed an additional 6$DEGC to 9$DEGC. Reduced nitrogen applications depressed asparagus production during the first 20 days of harvest, while low water rates did not affect asparagus yields during this same harvest period.
