Abstract

This chapter provides an overview and critical assessment of the TEX86 (tetraether index of 86 carbons) paleotemperature proxy. This proxy is widely used to reconstruct past temperatures, especially in deep geologic time where other proxy methods may not be viable. Uncertainties concerning the ecological aspects of TEX86 remain large and the development of accurate calibration models to translate TEX86 to temperatures is an active area of research. Nevertheless, TEX86 has revealed important insights into Earth's climate system and illustrates the applicability of molecular geochemistry to paleoclimate problems.
