Abstract

Presentation of Case A 23-year-old man was admitted to the hospital because of abdominal pain and vomiting. He was well until approximately two months earlier, when he began to experience crampy pain in the left upper part of the abdomen; the pain was often present on awakening and seemed to be relieved after the ingestion of food or antacid medication. Two weeks before admission the pain became more severe; the patient was evaluated at an emergency facility, where an x-ray film of the abdomen showed considerable fecal material and a diagnosis of constipation was offered.
