Presentation of Case A 28-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital because of severe abdominal pain and vomiting. The patient was well until 18 months earlier, when she experienced the first of four or five bouts of severe pain in the left lower abdominal quadrant, each of which began an hour or two after eating, lasted for about one week, and was treated by intramuscular injections of an unknown medication, with relief of symptoms; the attacks occurred approximately four months apart; during one episode the patient was told that she had colitis.
