title = "CHAPTER 15: The Categories That Bind",
abstract = "Drawing on data from a five-year longitudinal study of thirteen teacher education graduates, this chapter discusses the importance of abandoning the concept of a renaissance in preservice teacher education alone, and, instead, to creating more inclusive and cross-institutional structures for career-long professional education. It argues that a rebirth or reconfiguring of one element of professional education may be blocked or inhibited by other elements that are not changed and that a systemic view is important to any vision of educational reform.",

note = "Funding Information: The reforms promoted by the Carnegie Foundation of New York's Teachers for a New Era Project (Carnegie Foundation of New York, n.d .) call for more support of graduates and the universities supported by this project are using varied methods for doing so. Electronically based projects such as WINGS (Welcoming Interns and Novices with Guidance and Support, n.d.) at the University of Texas at Austin and BRIDGE (Building Resources: Induction and Development for Georgia Educators, n.d.) at the University of Georgia, and e-mentoring programs such as those based at Loyola University of Chicago and Northeastern Illinois University (Klecka, Clift, & Cheng, 2005) seek to keep professors and graduates in touch with one another. While it is too early to evaluate the longterm impact of these efforts, they are noteworthy in that they are beginning to break down the structure that terminates teacher education upon graduation and they lead us to think about how words might be used to help create new ways of talking about professional education and to help create more inclusive structures.
