N2 - The electronic structure of conjugated polymers of current interest in the developemnt of novel organic light-emitting diodes, poly(p-phenylenevinylene) and its derivatives, has been studied experimentally by ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy as well as theoretically using quantum-chemical calculations. The focus of this work is on the π-electronic structure near the Fermi level, which is of prime importance in the phenomena of charge carrier injection, interface formation, and light emission.
