Abstract
Currently, cytogenetic analysis is done using semiautomatic methods, involving substantial human intervention, which is slow and expensive. Chromosome counting is of significant economical importance, for it accelerates the karyotyping process, thereby facilitating quicker and less expensive cytogenetic analysis. In this paper, we present an automated counting algorithm based on digital image analysis. The algorithm was tested on a metaphase image database, with a 6% error rate.
