Abstract
Many bituminous and subbituminous coals contain levels of uranium (U) on the order of one part per million. The combustion of these coals for electrical power generation leaves large quantities of ash, in which trace elements such as U can be concentrated ten times or more. The United States Environmental Protection Agency proposes to reclassify fossil-fuel wastes such as coal ash as naturally-occurring radioactive materials (NORM) because of their potential U content, and more stringently regulate their handling and disposal.
