Abstract
Taking a comparative perspective overall and building upon earlier work carried out by the authors, the chapter contrasts the increasing emphasis in many teacher education contexts on a neoliberal performative agenda, dominated by standards and accountability with the stark reality of ecological threats, through climate change, and the rise of nativism and fervent national populism that has created an unstable and untrustworthy political climate in many of those same settings. The strength of a comparative perspective, especially when incorporating an historical dimension is that we may be reminded of the possibility of alternative scenarios and of the power of human agency.
