Abstract
The European narrative motif of the sacrificing friendship between two men can be traced from antiquity until at least the 18th century. There are several special narrative types which are analyzed here on the basis of concrete examples. Beginning with Martin Montanus' Wegkürzer, this paper demonstrates that poets of practically all time periods were fascinated by the same proof of friendship in the face of death of one of them. This narrative tradition illustrates how much common assumptions about literary-historical periods might have been rather artificial.
