Abstract

An emerging area of regenerative medicine is the engineering of artificial extracellular matrices that recapitulate biochemical and biophysical characteristics of native tissue environments to create an instructive microenvironment through a variety of biomaterials-based approaches. Key components of an artificial niche comprise a combination of biophysical, biochemical, and intercellular signaling. This microenvironment can be used for in vitro studies or to recapitulate an in vivo setting, to study cellular processes in a controlled manner or replace tissue. This article outlines details on fundamental and state of the art strategies in engineering artificial niches for regenerative medicine applications.
