Abstract

Plant factory with artificial lighting (PFAL) is an emerging technology to grow plants inside buildings under sole source lighting. Climate control in PFALs is challenging as the environmental control systems and methods are mainly derived from the practice and design guidelines of other controlled environment agriculture production systems, such as greenhouses and growth chambers. This chapter discusses the design considerations of air distribution systems and control strategies and methods for airflow, humidity, and CO2 enrichment in PFALs. Insights on Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning optimization using advanced approach to further improve the resource use efficiency of PFALs are provided.
