Evidence, Evocation and Public Memory in Rockstar Games’ Virtual Cityscapes

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

Visual images of cityscapes fall into two categories: evidence and evocation. Such interplay has a considerable impact on our public memory of the life of cities. After illustrating the visual categories of evidence and evocation in various types of media, we analyse the ways in which cities are evoked in a series of immersive ‘open world’ video distributed by Rockstar Games: Grand Theft Auto and L.A. Noire.
