N2 - Failure modeling of composites is an ongoing challenge. In the current work, an orthotropic plasticity-based material model has been implemented into LS-DYNA as ∗MAT_COMPOSITE_TABULATED_PLASTICITY_DAMAGE or ∗MAT_213. The material model is driven by tabulated input data which can be generated either from experiments or virtual testing and is made up of three submodels that deal with deformation, damage, and failure. The focus of the current work is the implementation, verification, and validation of a modified version of an already existing failure submodel, with a brief introduction to the deformation and the damage sub-model. The suite of validation tests involves a unidirectional composite and includes a stacked-ply model loaded at a slow rate as well a high-velocity impact of a flat panel. Preliminary results are encouraging and show the versatility of the developed material model.
