Abstract

FIREMAP is a computer model of surface fire spread developed using the PROMAP ecological simulation system. FIREMAP is linked to the GRASS GIS system which can be used to produce the initial data layers for the simulation. The GIS data base is a representation of the actual ecosystem under specified conditions and the simulation of a surface fire generated by FIREMAP will be an approximation of a real fire under the same conditions. An example is given which shows the effect of fuel moisture on fire spread. A second example indicates how fire moves over a complex environment with barriers to fire spread. -from Authors
