Abstract
Mexico is looking value in the unique aspects of its urban past. Thus, five of the country's heartland cities are revitalizing their historic city cores and in all five cities, certain elements of the core areas are on UNESCO's World Heritage list. In the list includes Guadalahara for its 19th century Hospicio Cabanas; Guanajuato, for its historic city center and adjacent mines; Queretaro, for its historic monuments zone; Puebla, for its historic center; and Mexico City, the Aztec, colonial, and now Mexican capital for its historic center. For revitalization, the planners are creating public amenities, aiming at maintaining vitality, reinventing the city core, and counteracting urban sprawl.
