Abstract

The paper describes basic concepts of data recording and detection in hard disk drives. Both Lorentzian channel model and partial response (PR) signaling are described. State of the art maximum likelihood PR detection schemes are discussed together with PR frequency response analysis. Finally, physical and logical organization of data on a disk is explained together with future possibilities to increase recording density up to 1 Tbit/sqinch.
