Abstract
There are many reasons why students struggle to engage in physical education (PE). A key factor that might help is a growth-oriented environment. Growth Mindset Theory challenges traditional teaching methods that use a “fixed” mindset and investigates an “open” mindset grounded in psychological research emphasizing the importance of effort, perseverance, and learning from failure. Studies indicate that students who perceive their abilities as unchangeable are less inclined to overcome challenges and have difficulty recovering from failures, which limits their potential. This article introduces the core concepts of Growth Mindset Theory, explains its relevance for PE teachers, provides strategies for fostering a growth mindset, and addresses common misconceptions. By increasing understanding and applying growth mindset principles, teachers can create a supportive environment to advance student abilities.
