Abstract
One of the most persistent questions in contemporary literary and cultural studies is related to the ability to think and perform actions in a deliberate way. To help answer this question, this study analyzes El lago en las pupilas by Luis Goytisolo. The novel presents situations in which emotions and personal beliefs prevail over objective facts. Moved by preoccupations to perform deliberate acts of agency, the characters sometimes regard as irrelevant circumstances that question or undermine the agency of some actions. Therefore, it is important to analyze the role of language to generate knowledge that coexist with delusions about the capacity to bring about initiative.
