Abstract
This chapter introduces changes in the demographic population in US schools and describes shifts in numbers of students who are classified as English language learners (ELLs). Then the authors describe the place of mathematics in the curriculum that can be challenging for ELLs. The chapter introduces each of the chapters in the collection by providing a brief description of each.
