Abstract
The impact of the comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 fragments with Jupiter provided an unprecedented opportunity to observe a rare cosmic event: the collision of several large objects with a planetary atmosphere. The IUE effort for this event extended from 1 June to 15 August, 1994 including a pre-impact baseline observing program and a search for short term evolution of the impact regions. The data archive includes observations of the photochemical and aerosol evolution of several impact sites, the detection of non-thermal auroral-like emission associated with the K, P2, and S impact events, temporal monitoring of the Jovian aurora, and observations the Io plasma torus.
