Abstract

The objective of this study was to determine whether arsenic exposure is associated with changes in biomarkers of lung inflammation measured by the ratio of metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9)/tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase (TIMP-1), levels of soluble form of Receptor for Advanced Glycation End products (RAGE) in sputum and with decreased lung capacity. Tap water of communities and first morning void urine were analyzed for arsenic. Arsenic levels in this region are 50-120 μg/L in drinking water. Total arsenic urinary (median) was higher in subjects with restrictive spirometric patterns than normal spirometric patterns subjects (123.7 vs. 92.9) (p < 0.05). In addition, we observed significantly decreased in ratio MMP-9/TIMP1 and RAGE levels [median (range)] in subjects with restrictive spirometric patterns in comparison with subjects normal [23.21 (17.5, 37.4) vs. 9.0 (3.5,16.4)] and [46.7 (34.4-71.3) vs. 31.2 (20.3-43.2)] respectively. This finding suggests a potential toxic mechanism in lung for arsenic exposure.
