N2 - Estimation of orientation or attitude is a longstanding problem in statistics and signal processing, with applications to crystallography, aeronautics and computer vision. In this paper, we consider the Mackenzie-Wahba estimator. This estimator is known to be maximum-likelihood but we further show that it is a Bayes estimator and also a best invariant estimator.
