Abstract

The diffusion coefficient matrix, [D], for a multicomponent solution is related to the matrix of Onsager kinetic coefficients, [L] through a matrix of thermodynamic mixing properties, [G]. The property that [L] must be symmetric can be used to constrain unknown thermodynamic mixing properties as well as diffusion coefficients for any multicomponent system. The application is illustrated with examples from garnet solid solutions of interest to geoscientists.
