Abstract
Mitochondria in Gonyaulax polyedra Stein have a highly variable morphology which depends on their location within the cell. The morphology ranges from mitochondria, 1 μm in cross section, with highly dense cristae which are located within the central sphere of golgi bodies to giant pleomorphic mitochondria, 5–8 μm in cross section containing condensed “chromosome” structures and located in the more peripheral regions of the cell. Elongated mitochondria containing microtubule‐like elements ware also observed.
