Abstract

Nutritional stresses include both high and low intakes of many nutrients. Both types of stress affect mucosal immunity and IgE production. IgA secretion into mucosal fluids is decreased by protein/calorie malnutrition. The effects of malnutrition on IgE production may result in elevation of IgE levels. T-cell regulation is critical for IgE and IgA antibody synthesis. Malnutrition suppresses T-cell function. High intakes of vitamin A and E can also alter T-cell action, cancer resistance, and perhaps IgE and IgA production.
