Abstract

The special section of the Centennial Special Issue on power and energy include two papers that cover the past and the present of power engineering, and the expectations for the future. The first paper entitled 'Electric power and energy engineering: The first century', deals with power engineering in the first century and its resources. The paper by Heydt, Ayyanar, Hedman, and Vittal discusses the specialized technologies that came from power system networking. The paper gives some insight into the complex mathematics of this field, and how power engineers have approached the specialized problems of large-scale system design, analysis, and control. The second paper entitled 'Smart grids and beyond: Achieving the full potential of electricity systems', is by Kezunovic, McCalley, and Overbye. This paper deals with present trends, and near and far-term futures of the field. The paper draws conclusions that focus on five main areas, renewable resources, customer involvement, automation, coping with uncertainty, and interoperability of new technologies.
