Abstract
Interest in the costs and utilization of behavioral health services continues to increase, driven in part by the rapid rise in psychotropic medication expenditures, the move towards mental health 'parity' in the U.S., and by the availability of new data in this area. This paper reviews the recent economic literature on behavioral health service utilization and costs, focusing on schizophrenia and substance abuse research. (C) 2000 Lippincott Williams and Wilkins.
