Abstract

The honeybee vitellogenin protein is receiving considerable attention in research that aims to understand the regulatory causality and evolutionary history of social ontogeny, behavior, and life span. This chapter reviews the theoretical and experimental studies leading to the current insight that an endocrine-like action of vitellogenin can regulate major aspects of social organization.
