N2 - Decarbonization of the Chemicals/Materials Industry (CMI) is feasible, even though technical and economic hurdles exist. However, given the prevailing constraints (economics, green electricity, available biomass), and weak decoupling of GDP from resource utilization, it is clear that the industry cannot achieve the Paris Agreement targets without transforming itself to a Sustainable Circular Enterprise. Such transformation will have deep and broadly-based ramifications on the economy, the structure of CMI and the character of CMI-companies, which need to reinvent themselves. In this paper we will offer data and arguments to substantiate the above statements, and will outline the questions that need to be answered by academic research.
