Abstract
Field observation and chemical and micromorphological analysis of manganese-rich rock varnish in almost every terrestrial weathering environment in western North American indicate that several variants of varnish exist. The characteristics of manganese coatings in varying environments are consistent with a biological genesis. Manganese concentrating and oxidizing microorganisms observed on rock varnishes were cultured and produced rock varnishes under laboratory conditions.-from Authors
