Abstract
Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) is one of the most commonly used and well-researched modalities in the management of pain. In this chapter, the history, indications, protocols of use, and future direction of SCS are reviewed and discussed. The first spinal cord stimulator was placed in 1967, and since that time, the applications and technology of SCS have grown and evolved. The role of SCS in pain management will continue to expand and is currently being explored in the treatment of brain and spinal cord injury and tumors.
