Abstract
Free chlorine can oxidize lower-substituted inorganic chloramines to higher-substituted chloramines. The free chlorine oxidation rate, of chloramines should still be slower than that of ammonia. Staged dosing of chlorine may reduce chlorine usage by limiting the side reactions and residual decay. However, staged dosing is not independent of breakpoint curve behavior. At high chlorine-to-ammonia-nitrogen ratios, the chlorine demand increases. However, the increase in demand in staged dosing should be less than in single dosing because of fewer side reactions.
