Abstract
Selection of insulators for contaminated areas requires (i) a survey of the contamination level, (ii) fog chamber tests to determine the flashover voltage of the insulators and (iii) field tests to verify the results. This paper describes the survey methods and discusses and evaluates the pollution test methods used in Canada and the USA. It also presents practical applications of laboratory test results for the selection of insulators for UHV transmission lines. Furthermore, details of insulator maintenance practices and methods of periodic washing, dry cleaning and silicon greasing are presented.
