Abstract

This is an exploratory study on sensegiving spirals using a case study of the SARS epidemic in Hong Kong in 2003. While knowledge on sensegiving cumulates, little is known about the interactive and continuous nature of sensegiving. To gain insight into this, we studied sensegiving spirals, or deviation-amplifying loops in which the cyclic relationship among two or more parties' sensegiving efforts builds upon itself. Our study provided a rich account regarding how sensegiving spirals manifest, including external contextual factors and internal leader and stakeholder factors that contribute to its birth, life and death.
