Abstract

New information on the behaviour of nest-weaving ants of the genera Oecophylla, Dendromyrmex, Polyrhachis and Camponotus is described. Electron micrographs reveal adaptations in the silk spinning apparatus of these ant larvae. The authors envisage 3 stages in evolution and consider that the most advanced weaver ants, of the genus Oecophylla, passed through lower grades similar to those exemplified by the other 3 genera.-J.J.Robertson
