N2 - James J. Duderstadt, Wm.A. Wulf, and Robert Zemsky present the role of information technology in shaping the university of future in their article 'Envisioning a Transformed University' (Issues, Fall 2005). Universities must adapt to the emergence of empowered and capable independent learners set free by the Internet. Universities must adapt foster intellectual flexibility, creativity, and the capacity for innovation in a global society interconnected by advances in communication technology. Universities will soon be free to create learning environments that offer ubiquitous access to all information. These new directions will engender change and reshape both the academy and society, unleashing a new type of intellectual liberty.
