Abstract
The first poetry collection to win the Newbery—which it received simultaneously with a Caldecott Honor—Nancy Willard's A Visit to William Blake's Inn: Poems for Innocent and Experienced Travelers is a complex verbal and visual homage to poet William Blake. Influenced by the women's poetry movement, which happened to coincide with Blake's entry into the canon of British Romantic poetry, Willard unearths the implicit feminism of Blake's verse in this sophisticated picture book. With her fantastical take on Blakean lyricism, Willard joined a large contingent of woman writers who reimagined Blake as a poet for children.
