Abstract
The substitution NaNa□-1Ca-1, which fills the A site, has been investigated in amphiboles close to the join tremolite-richterite. At 1123 K, compositions of amphiboles synthesized from bulk compositions on this binary are displaced towards magnesio-cummingtonite [Mg7Si8O22(OH)2], such that average compositions are better represented by the pseudobinary tremolite92magnesio-cummingtonite8-richterite. Major-element compositions and H2O contents are close to theoretical values for eight samples synthesized along this join. Unit-cell parameters vary smoothly with composition, a sin β showing the greatest increase as Na fills the A site. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy demonstrates that the amphiboles are highly ordered, with only the tremolite-rich compositions containing any chain multiplicity faults. -from Authors
