Abstract

There has been growing interest in using visual quality metrics for image compression. Recently, Han et. al. proposed a method for visually lossless compression using JPEG2000. In their method, visibility thresholds are experimentally measured and incorporated into a JPEG2000 encoder to control the errors introduced by quantization. In this work, we extend the work of Han et. al. to visually lossy regime. A series of Just Noticeable Differences are measured using pscyhovisual experiments that are conducted based on the quantization distortion model introduced by Han et. al. These measurements are used to build a perceptual visual quality model which is incorporated into a JPEG2000 encoder. The proposed encoder yields JPEG2000 Part I compliant codestreams at varying visual quality levels.
